Inspired by my dad’s 90s photo albums as a young DJ, Patta’s beginnings in 90s hip-hop and spending my childhood glued to MTV, Roots + Rhythm brings 90s hip-hop and streetwear back to life, exploring how this cultural lineage shapes youth style, identity and creative expression today. Bringing together 14 innovative young Black creatives in the North across fashion, film, photography and community-led practice, this project documents Black creative youth culture as it exists now and the people building scenes, creating community and shaping fashion from the ground up.
From my dad’s 90s community events and Patta’s early creative spaces to now, this project continues their legacy, creating space for Black creatives; by the community, for the community.
