Inspired by our personal relationships with sport as Muslim women, Muslim Women in Sport explores the intersection of faith, femininity and cultural identity through both my perspective and that of collaborator Hawwa Alam. Drawing from my Gambian, West African background and Hawwa’s South Asian, Pakistani and Indian heritage, the editorial reflects both the shared and distinct experiences that shape our journeys within sport.
Through styling, casting, image-making and an accompanying film, the project brings together femininity, sportswear and cultural identity through a playful, maximalist approach, blending athletic references with high fashion and culturally significant garments. In doing so, it highlights how identity is expressed through both movement and dress, capturing a balance between strength and softness, discipline and self-expression.
Produced by a team of Muslim and POC women, the project presents Muslim women as powerful, skilled and self-defined, grounded in collaboration and shared understanding.
