Through Her Eyes follows 5 young, emerging Black creative women across the North, working within a range of disciplines from acting, to fashion design and music. It also includes a friendship group of 5 young Black creative women, further exploring the dynamics of community, support and shared identity. Shot in the city streets they inhabit, the editorial moves through Manchester and Leeds, grounding the work in the environments that shape their creativity.
Combining portraiture with written interviews, the project presents these women in a soft, stripped-back and vulnerable way, allowing space for them to express their identities on their own terms. Each look was developed collaboratively, utilising their wardrobes, ensuring that what they wear feels authentic to who they are. The casting was intentional and carefully considered, with each woman bringing her own distinct sense of style. Together, they reflect the diversity and individuality within Black womanhood.
The accompanying interviews offer further insight into their experiences, touching on themes of identity, Black womanhood, girlhood and legacy, particularly in relation to inspiring the next generation of young Black girls. At its core, the editorial is about showing Black women in a more human, nuanced way, challenging the limited and often negative representations seen in mainstream media.
