Featured in Volume 57, Issue 6 of Mob Journal, The Future Is Black explores Afrofuturism through the imagined perspective of a young Black girl growing up in the 1970s. Inspired by the political and cultural movements of the era, including the Black Arts Movement and the Black Panther Party, the project reflects on how visions of the future were shaped by Black resistance, creativity and hope.
Centred around a futuristic world with Black women at the forefront, the project reimagines the future through optimism, empowerment and imagination. Through styling and image-making, it presents a bold and aspirational vision intended to inspire young Black girls to see themselves within the future they create.
